Focus on getting your priorities straight

Focus on getting your priorities straight

I had breakfast with a dear friend Kerry just over two years ago, we shared a discussion about her career choices and it really got me thinking about how important it is that we get our life priorities straight. Just as a healthy mind and body go hand in hand, it is vital to focus on the things that count and not waste our time and energy on unnecessary distractions.

I had breakfast with a dear friend Kerry just over two years ago, we shared a discussion about her career choices and it really got me thinking about how important […]

Kerry had gone through quite a lot of work changes over the last few years, having changed companies numerous times. Growth and new goals are important in our career, but it’s also very important not to be too flighty and quit something before you have given it a chance to flourish. After having years of experience in some of Australia’s top firms, Kerry made the wonderful decision to start her own swimwear label, Bondi Bather.

Interestingly enough, 2 years ago as we shared this breakfast, she was questioning whether she should go and have an interview with another corporate company. What frustrated me about this was is that it had only been two weeks since she started working really hard on her own business, yet she was still willing to potentially leave all that behind for another corporate position which wasn’t a solution to happiness.

After talking with her about it, we learnt that the main reason she was questioning continuing with her own swimwear project came from a place of fear. Will it pay her enough money? Will it be a success? Will it make her happy? All very valid questions, and my advice, which is why I am writing this today is, ‘how will you know if you don’t give it a proper go!’

In life, for something to be a success, we must give it the focus, energy and time it deserves, and not allow us to let fear get in the way and convince us that it won’t work out or is not a good idea.

Kerry didn’t want the job at the firm that requested an interview, but that little voice inside her (and us all) allowed her to doubt herself, and the success of her own company and she talked herself into considering the interview.

Have you ever made a decision that has most likely come out of fear? Perhaps you took a job because of the money, not because you enjoy doing the actual job?

Focusing on the positives of something is so important in order for it to be a success. And without getting all Bondi-hippy on you, it is true to say that what we think we feel, and what we feel, we create. Keep this in mind in all aspects of your life. Below are some examples of how I think this can affect us in aspects of our wellbeing.

Fitness

  • Negative images of ourselves do nothing for our self-esteem and only create barriers for us to make the physical changes that we want.
  • Focus on feeling the changes inside and you will start to see them on the outside.
  • Not let negative voices tell you that your not going to achieve your perfect body or achieve the fitness level you would like, this prevents us from training to our best ability and puts unnecessary stress on our body.

Relationships

  • If we are constantly looking for the next best option or the so called perfect partner, we will never be happy with what we have.
  • If we divide our time between too many people we don’t allow one potentially perfect partnership to form.
  • Love is not easy and is never what we imagine. Be realistic and focus on the positives in someone and it will create a positive environment to be around. Feel what you want to create and let it happen.

Career

  • Take risks and remember that we should love what we do.
  • Don’t allow fear to be our decision maker, have some faith and trust your instincts.
  • If you make a choice that creates a negative, just make a new choice to create a positive. Soon we learn how to always make choices in life that lead to a positive.

Love what you do, love what you are capable of, love those around you and love yourself. We only have one life and why waste it living in fear of our decisions.

It is amazing what can be achieved when we put the focus in the right place and send the positive energy where it needs to go. Karma will return the positive energy back.

Oh, and if you’re wondering, Kerry’s creative venture, Bondi Bather was and still is a roaring success, head to www.bondibather.com to see the proof of what can be achieved if you put your heart and soul behind it.
